Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' USDA Zone: 5-9

Red Baron Japanese Blood Grass' attractive grassy leaves are white in colour on a plant with an upright spreading habit of growth. As an added bonus, the foliage turns a gorgeous dark red in the fall. The dark red stems are very colorful and add to the overall interest of the plant.

Standing under two feet tall, it is best used as a filler in sunny borders or as a thriller in combination containers. This grass spreads slowly by underground runners and is typically not invasive in northern and eastern climates.

Red Baron Japanese Blood Grass is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Mass Planting
  • General Garden Use

More About Red Baron Japanese Blood Grass Ornamental Grass

Height:
18-20 inches
Spread:
12-18 inches

Red Baron Japanese Blood Grass does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. This plant does not require much in the way of fertilizing once established. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is quite intolerant of urban pollution, therefore inner city or urban streetside plantings are best avoided, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location.

Warm Season Grasses: These grasses are much slower starting in the spring. They do not push new growth until temperatures warm in early to midsummer. They flower later in the summer or fall with most blooms remaining into the winter. Most warm season grasses tolerate heat, humidity and drought; some even thrive in these conditions.

Red Baron Japanese Blood Grass is a fine choice for the garden, but it is also a good selection for planting in outdoor pots and containers. With its upright habit of growth, it is best suited for use as a 'thriller' in the 'spiller-thriller-filler' container combination; plant it near the center of the pot, surrounded by smaller plants and those that spill over the edges.

Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden. Be aware that in our climate, most plants cannot be expected to survive the winter if left in containers outdoors, and this plant is no exception.

NOTE: Some flowers and plants may be harmful or poisonous to people or pets if touched or ingested. If you require more information before placing an order, please let us know in advance.
