Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' | USDA Zone: 5-9 |
Henry's Garnet Virginia Sweetspire has racemes of fragrant white flowers at the ends of the branches in early summer. It has green deciduous foliage. The narrow leaves turn an outstanding burgundy in the fall. The smooth brown bark and purple branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape.
An improved selection of a native shrub which features extremely long and narrow panicles of white flowers in early summer, excellent fall color is more reliable than the species; spreads to form small colonies, good for the garden or for naturalizing.

Flower Colour: White Shades |
Great for grouping and for massing on large banks, in beds, and perennial and shrub borders. This is a good plant for woodland gardens or at the front of the mixed border. Its small size makes it perfect for smaller borders and beds. Thrives in moist, wet areas, but once established, can tolerate dry conditions. Not fussy about soil pH. Will grow in shade, but flowering and fall color improves when the plant gets at least some sun each day. May be pruned after blooming if required. In colder areas, sweetspire may experience a bit of weather damage coming out of winter, so prune any dead wood out after new growth has begun. If desired, fertilize in spring with a granular fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs, like a rose fertilizer. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden. Be aware that in our climate, most plants cannot be expected to survive the winter if left in containers outdoors, and this plant is no exception. NOTE: Some flowers and plants may be harmful or poisonous to people or pets if touched or ingested. If you require more information before placing an order, please let us know in advance. |
