Commander Hay Hens And Chicks is the perfect hardy, drought tolerant succulent for rock gardens; this variety produces dusty gray-green leaves that develop into deep red with green tips for a stunning display of colour; a lovely low addition to containers.
Commander Hay Hens And Chicks attractive succulent pointy leaves emerge grayish green in spring, turning dark red in colour with prominent light green tips throughout the season. It features unusual clusters of green star-shaped flowers with pink bracts rising above the foliage in mid summer. The brick red stems can be quite attractive.

Hens And Chicks need plenty of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain a tight rosette form. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons. These chicks can be left to form tidy clusters or removed to share and transplant. They are incredibly frost hardy and will happily overwinter under an insulating blanket of snow. Protect from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden. Be aware that in our climate, most plants cannot be expected to survive the winter if left in containers outdoors, and this plant is no exception.
