Royal Purple Smokebush features airy panicles of yellow flowers with fuchsia stalks at the ends of the branches from early to late summer. It has attractive deep purple foliage throughout the season. The round leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding brick red in the fall.
One of the most popular color accent plants for general garden use featuring deep maroon foliage all summer long, turning to red in fall; flowers and reddish inflorescences produce a fuzzy, smoky appearance throughout summer, hence the name.

Dark foliage, smoky blooms, and warm fall colors make this an excellent addition to the garden. Plant it with other shrubs to accentuate its colors or use it as an informal specimen. Royal Purple Smokebush should only be grown in full sunlight. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under average home landscape conditions. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden. Be aware that in our climate, most plants cannot be expected to survive the winter if left in containers outdoors, and this plant is no exception. An absolute stunner!
We could not be happier with the Royal Purple Smokebush we ordered this year. Because of the shipping time, it--very appropriately--arrived bare, and we've gotten the joy of watching it leaf out. It's been gorgeous every single day, with tiny green leaflets that swiftly turn burgundy and then deep purple. Having observed adult smokebushes in our neighbourhood, we know we're in for decades of absolute gorgeousness, and it's going to be a delight watching our two-gallon bush turn into a 10-15' showpiece over the next few years!
